Ruth Appledorn Mead
Ruth Appledorn Mead was recognized as a talented and serious artist, respected as a longtime art teacher in the northwest suburbs, and the key figure behind the noted Old Sculpin Gallery in Edgartown, Massachusetts.
Mrs. Mead was born in 1894 in Kalamazoo, Michigan and received her early formal training in art at the University of Michigan. She later attended school at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Minneapolis School of Design in addition to reeiving a master's degree in art from the University of Chicago. Learning first from her father who was also an artist, she studied through the 1940s and 1950s with Hans Hofmann and Joseph Albers.
