About Cynthia Woehrle
While spending time on Martha’s Vineyard I had the opportunity to study the subject of shorelines and where the sky and ocean intersect land. Much of my past work focuses on foggy scenes and cloudy sunsets-- color and atmosphere in the landscape. The new work studies the influence the ocean has on these two subjects and expands the perspective of the works. Three series have evolved through this study: Beach Day, View from the Ferry, and Moonscapes, all of which I have challenged myself to maintain my painting aesthetic. Conveying subtleties in the atmosphere and building up transparent paint layers that contrast from warm to cool continue to be my technical focus. The aim is to give the scene an intangible feeling and evoke in the viewer memories of place. My work has been described as visceral, emotional, soft, nuanced and dissipating. It is these qualities that have continually touched the hearts of my collectors.
