About Lynn Hoeft

A lifelong painter, gardener and cook, Lynn was born in San Francisco, California and received her art education at Bennington College and at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York, receiving a Bachelor of Industrial Design degree. Lynn has lived on Martha’s Vineyard since 1971, with brief times away in California, New York and Vermont.

She has always worked in transparent watercolor, often focusing on shells, stones, feathers and other bits and pieces from the beach. But unlike her earlier work which focused on precise detail and used many layers of paint, Lynn's new work is more expansive and less detailed. Still using watercolor, the new work explores imaginary distant landscapes and the patterns made by wind, fog, and moving water.

Above all, what has shaped her as an artist has been the simple joy of seeing something beautiful in nature:  whether that means trees, shells, moss and hedgerows, or clouds, ocean patterns and sky colors.
