Catboats! Sail Sculpin 2026!
Our celebration honors the remarkable history of the Catboat on Martha’s Vineyard and the legacy of master boatbuilder Manuel Swartz Roberts. From 1904-1954 Roberts built over 200 wooden catboats in the shingled building across from the Chappy Ferry that is now home to the Old Sculpin Gallery. When he retired he sold the building to a group of artist friends who formed the non-profit Martha’s Vineyard Art Association.
Each year we celebrate this unique heritage with a special exhibit featuring artwork by our member artists, archival photos and catboat memorabilia. The highlight of the celebration is a spectacular Parade of Sail through Edgartown harbor including catboats from across the Cape and Islands.
