Alison M. Convery

Alison Convery passed away on Friday, September 19, 2026.

She was a valued member of the MVAA as both an artist and a board member. Alison had been an MVAA member since 1960 and served on the MVAA board for over 40 years. She was a Trustee Emeritus of the Preservation Trust where she served since its founding in 1975.

In 2024 Alison celebrated her 90th birthday with a retrospective show of her artwork at the Old Sculpin. She continued to bring work to the gallery, and we will miss her dearly.

June Schoppe shared this anecdote about Alison: she spearheaded the effort to save the Flying Horses from being sold off piece by piece in the 70s!

Alison’s work exhibited her unique, colorful, folk-influenced paintings. Artist and illustrator, she was the author of the “Child’s Guide to Martha’s Vineyard” now in its sixth printing and being given to the children of those who loved the book growing up.
A graduate of Mass. College of Art, she lived on the island for the over 65 years, raising 3 islanders and 8 grandkids. “I have chosen special island events that are well known to all of us; it’s these events that meld us together, as Islanders.”
