Programs you support
For over 40 years the MVAA has offered art classes for adults and children. We are experiencing the influence of these classes, as we are now enrolling grandchildren of past alums! Over the years we have been able to expand our course offerings for adults and children and update the studio with new tables and easels thanks to a grant from the Farm Neck Foundation and the gracious donations of other supporters. We offer exciting opportunities for children, ages 7-13, to view and create art influenced by beauty of the Vineyard. Our adult courses offer everything from watercolor workshops to techniques in pastel and oils. Your contribution to our educational program will help pay for materials, guest artists, and expanding our reach through scholarship programs for Vineyard residents to enroll in classes.
Painting the Vineyard
We start the season off with our annual plein air event, Painting the Vineyard! Each season this event is co-sponsored by an island organization that fosters stewardship of the Vineyard. In the events inaugural year of 2013, we partnered with the Trustees of Reservations, a stalwart organization that manages six magnificent reservations on Martha’s Vineyard. For our 60th anniversary celebration in 2014 we partnered with the Preservation Trust, an organization that currently owns and maintains 18 historic properties central to the Island Community. The 2015 partnership was with the Martha’s Vineyard Museum which encourages the exploration of the Island and it’s diverse heritage followed by 2016 with The Farm Institute which preserves the past and future of the historic Katama Farm as a working and producing agricultural hub. Painting the Vineyard‘s 2017 event will take place this July in partnership with the Polly Hill Arboretum. We are excited to see the results of our artists painting at these historic locations on the island. Your contribution to this event will increase our ability to reach the community and to share the work by our artists.
Our scholarship program for Vineyard High School students has been a tradition for the MVAA for over 30 years. In recent years we have awarded 2-3 scholarships annually to Vineyard High School graduates matriculating to art school at a college or university. The students are also granted a week long exhibit in the Old Sculpin Gallery in the spring of their award. Your contribution to this program will enable us to increase the level of scholarship.
We take great pride in caring for this collection of important Vineyard works of art, which represents a cultural history of the island.
This is an important collection, the only one of its type on the Vineyard. The upkeep, conservation, and care of the over 100 paintings and drawings is an ongoing and often costly endeavor. Your contribution will insure that this chronicle of the Vineyard life remains in tact and available for the public to enjoy and learn from.
