“Martha’s Vineyard, Art Mecca Over the Years” Panel Discussion with Jane Slater, Doug Seward, and Sam Low

Next Tuesday, August 14, you are invited to a look back at the development of Martha’s Vineyard as a mecca for artists over the years, through the eyes of Islanders close to the scene.  Our panel discussion/storytelling session begins at 7 p.m. and will include a chance to see some of these treasured works of art, created by the likes of Thomas Hart Benton, Ruth Mead, James Cagney and Sanford Low.

Panelists include:

Jane Slater, a lifelong Islander and previous owner of Over South antique shop in Chilmark, which carried these artists in her many years in business.  She also served for many years as vice chairman of the Chilmark Library, chair of the Chilmark Historic Commission and column writer for the Vineyard Gazette. Jane grew up here and knew the Chilmark art community intimately.

Doug Seward, raised on Martha’s Vineyard with his twin brother, and  present owner of the Creekville antique shop, housed in the same facility as Over South, which he bought from Jane.  The shop/gallery showcases an array of local art that Doug has collected over many decades.  From the early days when his family ran Seward’s Market in Menemsha, he has had close and ongoing interaction with all the prominent artists in the Chilmark area.

Sam Low, a lifelong Islander and prolific photographer and writer.  He has a Ph.D. in anthropology from Harvard and has just published a book called “Hawaiki Rising: Sailing in the Wake of our Ancestors.” His article on Thomas Hart Benton and Denys Wortman is prominently featured in the summer edition of Martha’s Vineyard Arts & Ideas, and he was instrumental in the creation of the recent exhibition on  Harthaven artists at Featherstone.  His family was one of the founders of Harthaven and his father, Sanford, was an artist and colleague of those artists featured in this recent exhibit.
